사실은 사람들 앞에서 당당하게 퍼포머가 될 만큼 외향적인 성격이 아닌데도, 바디페인팅 사진작업의 연장으로 자연스럽게 퍼포먼스를 약 2년째 이어오고
있다. 여러 번 해봤으면 그만큼 익숙해 질 법도 한데, 사람들
앞에 서는 것은 언제나 내게 굉장한 스트레스를 만들었다.
‘Gaze’는 현장성을 크게 부각하는 퍼포먼스를
기획하다 도리어 가장 개인적이고 폐쇄적인 형태가 떠올라 실행하게 된 아이디어다. 배경음악 없이 진행되었던
지난해 퍼포먼스에서 가장 많이 들었던 후기는 가까이에서 느껴지는 나의 행위와, 떨림과, 숨소리가 인상적이었다는 것이다. 이러한 점이 더 강렬하게 느껴질
형태를 구상하다가, 또다시 사람들 앞에서 발가벗겨진 듯한 기분을 견디며 퍼포먼스를 수행할 걱정을 하다가
떠오른 것이 카메라가 나를 둘러싼 관람자들을 대체할 수 있으리란 생각이었다. 퍼포먼스를 기획하려 하지만
대중 앞에 설 용기가 없는 내게 사람의 대체물로 카메라를 세운다는 점이 효율적이면서 자조적이라 생각했다. 거기에
몇 회 가량 반복해왔던, 몸에 페인팅 한 후 캔버스 천에 찍어내어 기록한다는 ‘Imprint’를 작은 크기로 가볍고 빠르게 진행해 스스로를 비웃는다는 주제를 확정 지었다.
‘Gaze’라는 제목은 나를 둘러싼 카메라들(=시선)을 의미한다. 카메라는
실제 사람 보다 마주하기가 더 편하기 때문에 선택한 도구이지만, 작업을 진행하면서 도리어 개인의 공간에서까지(나의 공간임을 강조하기 위해 벽에 그림을 배치해 두었다) 시선의 사각지대를
제거하는 카메라의 부정적인 속성이 돋보이게 되었다. 5대의 카메라들은 단 한 사람의 몸을 각도 별로, 부위별로 비추며, 개인의 공간에서 사적으로 진행되는 듯한 감정 표출의
과정을 구석구석 기록한다. 혹은 모든 페인팅과 그것을 찍어내는 과정이 끝난 뒤, 직장인의 것과 같은 재킷을 걸치고 화면 밖으로 퇴장하는 장면이 마치 카메라 또한 사적인 영역의 일부로 보이게
만들기도 한다.
In fact, I'm not
extrovert enough to be a performer in front of people, but the body painting
photography has been naturally improved to performance for about two years. If
you have tried it many times, you will get used to it, but standing in front of
people has always caused me tremendous stress.
'Gaze' is an idea that is designed to try a performance that
emphasizes the vivid experience in field, but it became the most closed and
private form. Most people who participated last year 's performance without
background music told me that my acting, trembling, and breathing were
impressive. While designing the form that would be more intense, and worrying about
performing with the feeling of being peeled off again in front of people, the
idea that the camera could replace the spectators around me came across my mind.
It was efficient and self-mocking that I, who has no courage to stand up to the
public, set up a camera as a substitute for people and perform. I decided on
the theme of self-mocking by performing ‘Imprint(painting on my body and then
imprinting with canvas)’ again. This time it would be proceeded lightly and
quickly on a small pieces of canvas.
The title 'Gaze' means the cameras surrounding me. The camera
is a tool I chose because it is more comfortable to face than the actual
person, but as the work progresses, negative attribute of camera that erase
blind spot of gaze even in my private space(I set a picture of mine on the wall
to emphasize my space). The five cameras record a single person's body at each
angle and part, and record every aspect of the process of emotional expression
that seems to be proceeding privately in a private space. Or, after all the
paintings and the process of taking them out, the job of putting on a jacket
like a worker and exiting the screen makes the camera look like a part of the
private realm.
